7 Life Lessons We Can Learn From SATC’s Samantha Jones

Anyone who’s watched Sex and the City – and it should be everyone, because it’s amazing – will remember the free-speaking, over-the-top-fabulous, honest-to-the-point-of-offensive Samantha Jones. While I love Carrie Bradshaw, I can’t help but thinking how the show would have been so different had Samantha been the main character. Her wild behaviour and take-no-shit attitude to life would have taken SATC to the next level of outrageous – probably why the writers chose to keep Samantha firmly in the ‘best friend’ role. While there are many life lessons that can be taken from the iconic series, the best ones are learnt from Samantha. Here’s my favourite 7.

  1. Stop Caring About What Others Think About You

This is a lot easier said than done, but sometimes, we just need reminding to stop obsessing over what other people think about us, and just live our lives exactly how we want to.

2. Forget the Past and Move On

In an era of #ThrowbackThursday and Timehop, we are obsessed with nostalgia and the past. As Samantha reminds us, the past is gone, forget about it and move on.

3. There’s More to Life Than Marriage

Throughout SATC, Samantha spent a lot of time telling  her friends to avoid marriage, and insisting that she didn’t want to get married herself. It would have been easy for the writers to sculpt Samantha’s perfect man, have him sweep her off her feet and end up married with children. But they didn’t, showing that Samantha’s attitude to marriage – while deviating from society’s norms – is one that should be widely accepted.

4. Trust Your Gut Instinct

When you meet an amazing guy, it’s so easy to get caught up in a fantasy world imagining your future. Samantha reminds us to trust our gut instinct – and be realistic. This is life after all.

5. Don’t Take Sh*t From Anyone

(This sounds like something I’d drunkenly slur at my friends after they tried to quietly tell each other that they think I’ve had one too many. Still stands as a solid life lesson though.)

6. Don’t Make Your Whole Life About Love

Samantha reminds us that this isn’t what life is all about – make your own life, pursue your own hobbies, etc. (Although to be fair, a large part of SATC’s plotline was obsessing about men).

7. Honesty is always the best policy.

No matter how brutal it can be.
